Fonts and typefaces. Even a selection of 101 fonts may sometimes not be enough!
Making the choice of the right font at the right time is a bit of an art. One font which could work very well in a specific setting could be a hateful choice for a different scenario. However, there’s always a good option for every setting, and there’s always going to be good fonts and horrible typefaces which should be wiped off the face of the internet (and the face of the planet for that matter).
We’ve gone around and researched. We asked the designers, the creatives, the artistic directors and the typeface geeks at the office, and made a list of options which we believe you could find very good use for.
The typefaces that have plenty of intrinsic character work well when a designer really puts them to good use. Here is a list of fonts that will look good in almost any context while, possibly, adding a little personality of their own.
We’ve saved you the hassle of visiting all the sites and downloading the files individually. Here’s a bundle with all the ones we’ve chosen – it’s a 50+ Mb free fonts download 😉

Blogger Sans was designed primarily for the use in headlines of the website. Blogger Sans draws inspiration from the clarity and legibility of the popular font Dosis with an additional support of the lost Cyrillic languages. The bolder weights are lighter and softer. The following elements (-b-d-h-k-p-q-y-) are shorter, thus the headlines and subheads could be put in the dense line spacing. In addition the outline of the Blogger Sans is more smooth with better eligibility.
Script Fonts / Free Handwriting fonts
Handwritten-like or scripted fonts will always have a specific charm. Beautiful scripts will always remain just that, and there are so many instances where a design gets that human touch by adding a script or handwritten font.

Grand Hotel finds its inspiration from the title screen of the 1937 film “Cafe Metropole” starring Tyrone Power. This condensed upright connecting script has a classic vibe to it.
It has a wonderful weight to it that feels subtly tied to Holiday and Bakery themed designs, even though it can work outside that genre.
Mink Type is a cool hand painted display typeface (only eps version is available) that is created by using brush tools in Illustrator. Each letter has 3 variations including upper and lower cases, you can create your custom feel for your design. I like to use a mix of upper and lower cases and you may use different combinations. It may work in different purposes.
Google Fonts
Google Fonts has become an awesome resource for designers – for an item to become a member of this exclusive club, it really must have something special. No wonder they’re so popular, especially in web design. Here are our favourites!
Roboto is one of our favourites here at BeeWits, if you look around our online and offline resources, you’ll find it quite often 😉
Roboto has a dual nature. It has a mechanical skeleton and the forms are largely geometric. At the same time, Roboto features friendly and open curves. While some grotesks distort their letterforms to force a rigid rhythm, Roboto doesn’t compromise, allowing letters to be settled into their natural width. This makes for a more natural reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types

The type itself is simple, professional, and clean, yet it has many subtle characteristics such as the capital J with a descender that goes beyond the baseline. Open Sans looks beautiful in both smaller and larger sizes. The extra bold variation is really something you must find use for – perfection.
This humanist sans serif has great legibility even at small sizes, and has been optimized for both web and mobile interfaces. This free web font has an upright feel, with open letterforms and a neutral-yet-friendly appearance that ensures versatility.

PT Sans was developed for the project “Public Types of Russian Federation.” The second family of the project, PT Serif, is also available.
The fonts are released with a libre license and can be freely redistributed: The main aim of the project is to give possibility to the people of Russia to read and write in their native languages.
The project is dedicated to the 300 year anniversary of the civil type invented by Peter the Great in 1708–1710. It was given financial support from the Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications.
They include standard Western, Central European and Cyrillic code pages, plus the characters of every title language in the Russian Federation. This makes them a unique and very important tool for modern digital communications.
PT Sans is based on Russian sans serif types of the second part of the 20th century, but at the same time has distinctive features of contemporary humanistic designs. The family consists of 8 styles: 4 basic styles, 2 captions styles for small sizes, and 2 narrows styles for economic type setting.

Exo is a contemporary geometric family designed by Natanael Gama. Initially funded through a kickstarter project, it was eventually released for free. Exo has 18 styles, so you won’t have any problems finding the weight you need. The only nag about Exo is that it tends to be a little hard to read when small, because it has many curves and shapes in its letterforms – so it may not be the ideal font for small body copy. And that’s why Exo2 was developed, to solve this specific legibility problem.

One of the first options to be featured in Google’s Web Fonts library, Oswald has been updated to include multiple weights, extended character sets and better kerning. It has its roots in the classic Alternate Gothic sans-serif typeface style, created by designer Vernon Adams, and is an excellent font choice for headlines and captions.
Vollkorn is German for ‘wholemeal’ and is Friedrich Althausen’s first attempt at typeface design, but it has been downloaded thousands of times. Its chunky, well-defined serifs give it confidence and energy that make it equally effective at large sizes for headlines or titles, or for larger passages of text.
The Droid Serif family features a contemporary appearance and was designed for comfortable reading on screen. Designed by Steve Matteson, Type Director of Ascender Corp, Droid Serif features slightly condensed letterforms to maximize the amount of text displayed on small screens. Vertical stress, sturdy serifs and open forms contribute to the readability of Droid Serif while its proportion and overall design complement its companion Droid Sans.
Droid Serif family has four styles: Regular, Italic, Bold & Bold Italic.
Arvo is a geometric slab-serif typeface family suited for screen and print. The family includes 4 cuts: Roman, Italic, Roman Bold, Bold Italic. It is a open font distributed through the Google Font Directory. The flavour of the font is rather mixed. Its monolinearish, but has tiny bit of contrast (which increases the legibility a little in Mac OS X.) The name Arvo is a typical Estonian man’s name, but is not used widely any more. In the Finnish language, Arvo means “number, value, worth.” Considering how much programming is behind hinting, ‘number’ is also true.

Lora is a well-balanced contemporary serif with roots in calligraphy. It is a text typeface with moderate contrast well suited for body text.

Technically Lora is optimised for screen appearance, and works equally well in print.

People read and interact with text on screens more and more each day – with typically what happens on screen ends up being more important than what is printed. Electronic books puts pressure on type designers to seek out the ideal designs for reading on screen.
Bitter is a “contemporary” slab serif typeface for text, specially designed for comfortably reading on any computer or device. It combines the large x-heights and legibility of the humanistic tradition with subtle characteristics in the characters that inject a certain rhythm to flowing texts.

Oranienbaum is a modern high contrast Antiqua with well-defined, recognizable features. Based on the architecture of classic Antiqua, such as Bodoni, Oranienbaum is typical of the typefaces from the first quarter of the 20th century: pronounced serifs, contrasting geometry, and an interplay of right angles and flowing lines. It is well suited for both headlines and body text.
It was designed through a collaboration of Oleg Pospelov as the main type designer, with Jovanny Lemonad as art director, technical engineer and publisher.
The Art Director’s choice
Our art director is quite finicky when it comes to choice of fonts. The choices show an understated sophistication – they’re always close at hand.

The typeface Geek’s choice
The typeface geek was quite annoyed when we asked to choose a list of favourite fonts.
“A specific font can be a great choice in one scenario and an awful choice in a different scenario”
We of course, agree very much with this sentiment. You always need to choose a font which is appropriate for the specific design you’re working on. Not everything will work in every scenario – so do always keep that in mind

Fjord features sturdy construction, prominent serifs, low-contrast modulation and long elegant ascenders and descenders relative to the ‘x’ height. Fjord performs well in sizes from 12 px and higher but because of its original design and careful detailing Fjord can also be a distinctive font choice for larger text headlines and in corporate design. Fjord is inspired by the feeling found in both renaissance and contemporary typeface design.

This font has a lot of attention to the diacritics, especially to “æ” which has loops connecting in a continuous way, so the “e” slope was determined by this character.
The Designer’s Choice
Our designer is also quite choosy when it comes to fonts he prefer. He’s unhappy that he’s the last person to be quoted in the article as he feels that his choice should have been given a higher priority 🙂 – but he did spend a lot of time finding this great list of fonts he really likes.

Playfair is a transitional design. From the time of enlightenment in the late 18th century, the broad nib quills were replaced by pointed steel pens. This influenced typographical letterforms to become increasingly detached from the written ones. Developments in printing technology, ink, and paper making, made it possible to print letterforms of high contrast and delicate hairlines.
The font takes influence from the designs of printer and typeface designer John Baskerville, the punchcutter William Martin’s typeface for the ‘Boydell Shakspeare’ (sic) edition, and from the ‘Scotch Roman’ designs that followed thereafter.
As the name indicates, Playfair Display is well suited for titling and headlines. It has an extra large x-height and short descenders.
Being a transitional design, stylistically Playfair can accompany Georgia, where Georgia is used for body text.

Hi Jennifer, you don’t need to download Google fonts to be able to use them since these are actually Google fonts – it’s far easier to use them from Google fonts directly. For the sake of simplicity we chose to leave these out – however we might actually take your hint and add them to the download too.
I think this list is the best one for me. Thanks David Attard for putting all these together. Another thing you please list out some non-cursive font list. I need them in future. Thanks in advance.
100 fonts. Streetwear is in there twice. But it’s good enough that it’s worth mentioning twice.
Hey Josh,
thanks for pointing that out! Seems like we got too excited with it – but don’t worry, we’ll find another and make sure it’s 101 😉
I can’t find some fonts in the list within the download? ( Oswald / Oranienbaum for example? ) Not sure what I’m missing?
