Fonts and typefaces. Even a selection of 101 fonts may sometimes not be enough!

Making the choice of the right font at the right time is a bit of an art. One font which could work very well in a specific setting could be a hateful choice for a different scenario. However, there’s always a good option for every setting, and there’s always going to be good fonts and horrible typefaces which should be wiped off the face of the internet (and the face of the planet for that matter).
We’ve gone around and researched. We asked the designers, the creatives, the artistic directors and the typeface geeks at the office, and made a list of options which we believe you could find very good use for.

The typefaces that have plenty of intrinsic character work well when a designer really puts them to good use. Here is a list of fonts that will look good in almost any context while, possibly, adding a little personality of their own.

The following elements (-b-d-h-k-p-q-y-) are shorter, thus the headlines and subheads could be put in the dense line spacing. In addition the outline of the Blogger Sans is more smooth with better eligibility.

Google Fonts

Google Fonts has become an awesome resource for designers – for an item to become a member of this exclusive club, it really must have something special. No wonder they’re so popular, especially in web design. Here are our favourites!

21. Roboto
22.Roboto Slab

License: Apache 2.0 License
Format: Embed script
Tags: Structured, Geometric, Versatile, Clean, Sans Serif, Thin, Bold, Oblique
Styles: 12 styles

Roboto is one of our favourites here at BeeWits, if you look around our online and offline resources, you’ll find it quite often 😉
Roboto has a dual nature. It has a mechanical skeleton and the forms are largely geometric. At the same time, Roboto features friendly and open curves. While some grotesks distort their letterforms to force a rigid rhythm, Roboto doesn’t compromise, allowing letters to be settled into their natural width. This makes for a more natural reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types

23. Ubuntu

Styles: 10 styles
Open Sans was designed by Steve Matteson and comes in 10 different styles, from light to extra bold. The type itself is simple, professional, and clean, yet it has many subtle characteristics such as the capital J with a descender that goes beyond the baseline. Open Sans looks beautiful in both smaller and larger sizes. The extra bold variation is really something you must find use for – perfection.

This humanist sans serif has great legibility even at small sizes, and has been optimized for both web and mobile interfaces. This free web font has an upright feel, with open letterforms and a neutral-yet-friendly appearance that ensures versatility.
There is also an Open Sans Condensed version that comes in 3 styles.

25. PT Sans
26. PT Serif

License: SIL Open Font License 1.1
Format: .TTF
Tags: Unique, Modern, Clean, Versatile, Geometric, Contemporary, Distinctive, Sans Serif
Styles: 4 styles

PT Sans was developed for the project “Public Types of Russian Federation.” The second family of the project, PT Serif, is also available.

The fonts are released with a libre license and can be freely redistributed: The main aim of the project is to give possibility to the people of Russia to read and write in their native languages.

The project is dedicated to the 300 year anniversary of the civil type invented by Peter the Great in 1708–1710. It was given financial support from the Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications.

They include standard Western, Central European and Cyrillic code pages, plus the characters of every title language in the Russian Federation. This makes them a unique and very important tool for modern digital communications.

PT Sans is based on Russian sans serif types of the second part of the 20th century, but at the same time has distinctive features of contemporary humanistic designs. The family consists of 8 styles: 4 basic styles, 2 captions styles for small sizes, and 2 narrows styles for economic type setting.

27. Exo
28. Exo 2

License: SIL Open Font License 1.1
Type: .TTF

Tags: Contemporary, Geometric, Versatile, Legible, Sans Serif, Structured

Exo is a contemporary geometric family designed by Natanael Gama. Initially funded through a kickstarter project, it was eventually released for free. Exo has 18 styles, so you won’t have any problems finding the weight you need. The only nag about Exo is that it tends to be a little hard to read when small, because it has many curves and shapes in its letterforms – so it may not be the ideal font for small body copy. And that’s why Exo2 was developed, to solve this specific legibility problem.

29. Lato

Tags: calligraphy, google font, Serif, Contemporary, Contrasting, Curved, Modern
Styles: 4 styles

Lora is a well-balanced contemporary serif with roots in calligraphy. It is a text typeface with moderate contrast well suited for body text.

License: SIL OFL, 1.1
Format: .TTF
Tags: google font, Contemporary, Serif, Legible, Comfortable, Subtle, Rhythmic

Based on the architecture of classic Antiqua, such as Bodoni, Oranienbaum is typical of the typefaces from the first quarter of the 20th century: pronounced serifs, contrasting geometry, and an interplay of right angles and flowing lines. It is well suited for both headlines and body text.

It was designed through a collaboration of Oleg Pospelov as the main type designer, with Jovanny Lemonad as art director, technical engineer and publisher.

The typeface Geek’s choice

The typeface geek was quite annoyed when we asked to choose a list of favourite fonts.

“A specific font can be a great choice in one scenario and an awful choice in a different scenario”

We of course, agree very much with this sentiment. You always need to choose a font which is appropriate for the specific design you’re working on. Not everything will work in every scenario – so do always keep that in mind

This font has a lot of attention to the diacritics, especially to “æ” which has loops connecting in a continuous way, so the “e” slope was determined by this character.

The Designer’s Choice

Our designer is also quite choosy when it comes to fonts he prefer. He’s unhappy that he’s the last person to be quoted in the article as he feels that his choice should have been given a higher priority 🙂 – but he did spend a lot of time finding this great list of fonts he really likes.

70. Playfair Display

License: SIL Open Font License, 1.1
Format: TTF
Tags: Transitional, Titling, Headlines, Editorial, Serif
Styles: 12 styles

Playfair is a transitional design. From the time of enlightenment in the late 18th century, the broad nib quills were replaced by pointed steel pens. This influenced typographical letterforms to become increasingly detached from the written ones. Developments in printing technology, ink, and paper making, made it possible to print letterforms of high contrast and delicate hairlines.

The font takes influence from the designs of printer and typeface designer John Baskerville, the punchcutter William Martin’s typeface for the ‘Boydell Shakspeare’ (sic) edition, and from the ‘Scotch Roman’ designs that followed thereafter.

As the name indicates, Playfair Display is well suited for titling and headlines. It has an extra large x-height and short descenders.
Being a transitional design, stylistically Playfair can accompany Georgia, where Georgia is used for body text.
