Great article. In my experience it has been backlinks almost exclusively that have made the difference for my SEO. On-page stuff has helped a little but whenever I make big gains in the serps it is almost always from link building that I have done.
For sure, backlinks remain the most important part – the engine for SEO. Yet, a good engine, on a “car” with a poor body, is not going to be as effective as a good engine on a good car.
